Terms of Service
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of Self Defence (the “Service”), operated by Self Defence(“we”, “us”, “our”). By creating an account, joining a room, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms.
1. The Service
Self Defence is a private, invite-only party game for friend groups playing together on a voice or video call. Hosts create a private room and share a 6-character code with people they personally know. There are no public rooms, no public profiles, and no matchmaking. Rooms exist only for the duration of a single session.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher) to use the Service. By using the Service you represent that you meet this requirement and have the authority to accept these Terms.
3. Accounts
Hosts must create an account via our authentication provider (Clerk). Players joining a room are not required to create an account. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for everything that happens under your account.
4. Acceptable use
You may use the Service only with people you know personally and who have consented to participate. You agree not to:
- Use the Service to harass, threaten, dox, or defame anyone.
- Submit, generate, or display content that targets protected groups, references real-world tragedy, sexualises any person, depicts minors in any inappropriate context, or violates any law.
- Use the Service against participants who have not given prior informed consent to play.
- Attempt to identify, reverse-engineer, scrape, or interfere with the Service, other users, or our infrastructure.
- Resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit the Service without our written permission.
We may suspend or terminate your access at any time, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms or the House Rules.
5. User-generated content
Some game modes let players submit prompts or text. You are solely responsible for the content you submit. You grant us a limited, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host and display that content within your room for the duration of the session and as needed to operate the Service. We do not claim ownership.
6. AI-generated content
Some prompts and forfeits are generated by a large language model via OpenRouter. AI output can be unexpected, inaccurate, or inappropriate despite our content filters. We do not warrant that AI-generated content will always be safe, suitable, or correct, and we are not liable for AI output beyond our reasonable best efforts to filter it. If you see AI output that violates the House Rules, please report it to help@selfdefence.app.
7. Paid features
AI question and forfeit generation is sold as a paid subscription or time-limited pass. Payments are processed by Polar, who acts as the Merchant of Record for your purchase and handles applicable taxes. Polar's terms apply to the payment itself.
Subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled. You can cancel any time from the customer portal linked inside the app; access continues until the end of the paid period. One-time passes (Weekend Pass) are non-recurring and expire automatically.
Refunds are handled per Polar's refund policy. Contact help@selfdefence.app if you believe you were charged in error.
8. Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time. We can suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, the House Rules, or applicable law, or if continuing to provide the Service to you would expose us to legal or reputational risk.
9. Disclaimer
The Service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that any content (including AI output) will be accurate or suitable.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Self Defence will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for loss of profits, revenues, data, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim arising out of these Terms is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or USD 100, whichever is greater.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Nigeria, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. Disputes will be resolved in the competent courts of Nigeria.
If you are a consumer in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or any other jurisdiction with mandatory consumer-protection laws, nothing in these Terms limits any statutory rights you have under your local law.
12. Changes
We may update these Terms from time to time. If the changes are material we'll prompt you to re-accept the updated version before you can continue using gated features.
